Running the Mopan river near San Ignacio in Belize
Explore Belize by paddle, sail, surfboard, and more!

Belize Adventure Week -- our ever-popular, action-packed tour -- explores this fascinating country using a multi-sport format. Our trend-setting itinerary is the culmination of twenty- three years of our on-going Belize discovery; this adventure packs sixteen sports into eight days! We now have thirty-one years under our belt as a top-notch adventure travel company, let us show you our favorite country!

Xunantunich Mayan ruins.

You begin your exploration of Belize with a series of outdoor sports in the Maya Mountains where we run a whitewater river by kayak, hike on jungle trails, venture deep into a sacred Mayan ceremonial cave, climb Mayan ruins, and descend an underground river by raft and kayak, finding our way with headlamps. Visit our Belize Adventure Week itinerary page to see what we do each day.

Mid-week we travel far out to sea to Slickrock’s exclusive Water Sport Center on Long Caye at Glover’s Reef, an underwater national park. Here we base from our private island, surrounded by coral reefs and the aqua-blue Caribbean Sea. We use sea kayaks to access Caribbean snorkeling sites and other islands in the atoll. In addition to sea kayaking and snorkeling we have top-notch surf kayaks, surf boards, and stand-up paddle boards to take advantage of our private wave, fully-outfitted fishing kayaks, and complete windsurfing rigs for all levels. Belize dive packages are available just down the beach for both certified divers and beginners. Our island is also the perfect location for sport fishing and kite boarding, so bring your gear if you are experienced in either of these sports. Fishermen are pleasantly surprised to discover that we also pay for All of our cabanas sit right on the edge of the island.their fishing licenses so they can begin to fish right away!

Our eco-resort is powered by the sun and wind, and your cabanas are perched right on the shore directly above the surf. Our huge open-air dining hall is the center of island life, where you enjoy cold drinks and home-cooked meals. Our composting toilets and showers pumped by the sun complete our eco-friendly set-up. Long Caye offers a backdrop few locations can match. We are the only adventure tour operator in Belize with a private island! To find out more about the atoll, visit our Glover's Reef page.

Inland our lodging is in private, family-style accommodations, and the meals prepared by our lodges include a wide variety of foods, including fresh seafood, tropical fruit salads, and fresh bakes breads. Running the Caves Branch River

"Belize Adventure Week was way beyond my expectations. I absolutely loved everything about Belize Adventure Week! When I chose the trip, although it was exactly what I was looking for in a vacation, I was apprehensive about how I would fit in, being a 55 year old female traveling alone, wondering if I would spend my time feeling like the odd person out. That fear was immediately dispelled the minute I meet my first group member. Our group was so great – we ranged in age from early 30’s to 61, we really bonded well and had so much fun together. Age was not at all an issue, nor was the fact you came alone or with a friend, what was important was that you were physically fit, were ready for an adventure, and wanted to have a good time. Of course an integral part of the group dynamic was Neri – what a great asset to your company! Neri has both an incredible personality that makes everyone feel immediately at ease and additionally he is so very knowledgeable and skilled in his job that you couldn’t help but have an excellent trip!"

Accommodations

Maya Mountain Lodge

Conveniently located but surrounded by jungle, Maya Mountain is nestled beneath the rainforest canopy. Situated on a large parcel of private land close to San Ignacio, this friendly, family-run jungle lodge boasts an excellent staff and their meals are superb. For guests who choose to arrive several days early, this is a fantastic place to stay because it is within walking distance of downtown San Ignacio, Belize.

At Maya Mountain we stay in "The Parrot Perch", a private family-style house with private rooms and baths, and a huge porch where we enjoy cold drinks after a long day on the river or in the caves. They also have an outdoor dining pavilion, a pool, internet access for guests, and beautifully tended gardens. The setting immerses you in the daily rhythms of the surrounding jungle, and the birding is excellent right on the grounds. Basing out of Maya Mountain for the inland part of Adventure Week allows our groups a perfect blend of accessibility and comfort.

Our cabanas sit right on the water's edgeLong Caye at Glover's Reef

When we first moved to Glover's Reef in 1992 our goal was to create a facility that feels non-developed. Obviously if you build a building, that’s some level of development. But throughout the Caribbean there are very few facilities that are rustic by design. On Long Caye, development means fifteen cabanas, a well-stocked kitchen, solar-powered water pumps, a composting toilet, three dozen sea kayaks, a bunch of sailboards, surf boards, and surf kayaks, and a dive shop (the only thing not owned by Slickrock). There are no air conditioners, no maid service, no flush toilets. But there is a fridge permanently loaded with Fantas and Belikin beer. It’s the best in adventure travel — right down to the excellent Garifuna chefs who cook your meal and then sit down with you to dine.

Hammock on cabana porch, Belize

Depending on your experience, our Water Sports Center is either the cushiest camp or the most rustic resort you have seen. We keep the island in as natural a state as possible, and there is no electricity or plumbing. Two-person cabanas are perched above the surf, and the ever-present breeze keeps the temperatures well below what they are on the mainland. Each cabana has single or double beds, a solar-powered light, and a porch with hammocks and lounge chairs (see the island accommodations page for more photos).

Our dining hall features solar and wind-powered lights and music, propane stove and refrigerator (for cold beer and soda!), and our extensive library. We drink collected rainwater, and we bathe with well water pumped by the sun (not heated, the showers are about 70 degrees). Composting toilets (odor-free!) complete this ecologically friendly set-up. Our spacious island (13.5 acres) and rustic facilities ensure your comfort without compromising the adventure of living on an undeveloped and uncrowded island. Best of all, a hammock with your name on it is waiting under the palms. For more details on these and other island amenities visit our web page.
